Complex and Critical Care

Emergency
The Edmundston Regional Hospital Emergency Department comprises 16 stretchers, including nine for assessment and treatment, two for the Resuscitation Room, five for observation and two fastrack chairs. It serves the population of the Madawaska and southern Témiscouata regions as well as neighbouring regions in Maine who seek treatment there, as well as unstable patients from the Grand Falls and Saint-Quentin Emergency Departments.

Ambulance Services
RHA4 is responsible for ambulance services in the greater Edmundston area. The department responds to over 2,000 calls a year, including two-thirds of which are for emergencies, while the other third supports patient transfers to tertiary care or intraregional centres. Ambulance attendants are authorized to operate defibrillators and administer medications based on established protocols. Services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The future of healthcare in New Brunswick is such that ambulance attendants will be required to play a greater role in pre-hospital services.

Intensive Care
The Intensive Care Unit mainly serves adult patients requiring secondary medical and surgical intensive care. The unit includes eight beds, plus three contingency beds. The main admitting diagnoses are coronary diseases (angina and infarct), arrhythmias, respiratory failure, vascular surgery, and drug or other intoxication.

Renal Dialysis Service
Available at the Edmundston Regional Hospital since the 70’s, the Renal Dialysis Service is responsible for delivery of various care and treatments for patients who are affected by conditions resulting in current or potential chronic renal failure. The unit offers follow-up and prevention services to clients with kidney disease. It provides hemodialysis care, assisted care dialysis for patients who meet criteria and, finally, peritoneal dialysis care and a teaching program on home care.

Surgical and Ambulatory Care

Surgical Suite
The Surgical Suite is made up of four interrelated sectors, i.e Operating Rooms, Day Surgery, Recovery Room, and Labour Room. They attend to elective and urgent cases classified under same day surgery (SDS) and day surgery (DS) or admitted under the following specialities: general, vascular and thoracic surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, gynaecology, urology and dental surgery.

Surgery
The 52-bed unit is for surgical patients. This unit also provides services to other types of clients, including burn victims, patients with medical diagnoses or certain mental health problems, and palliative care patients.

Ambulatory Care
This unit provides patients and their families with various health services through specialized clinics. Services include health care and services, diagnostic services, treatments, teaching and follow-up. The Edmundston Regional Hospital Ambulatory Care Department comprises 25 different clinics.

Pulmonary Clinic
RHA4 benefits from the follow-up done with its clients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma through its Pulmonary Clinic. Since its implementation, the Pulmonary Clinic has been offering re-education and exercise programs to maximize the pulmonary potential of each client registered in the program. At the same time it offers teaching on medication administration, on the importance of close follow-ups, and provides increased accessibility to care and services for clients, resulting in fewer hospital stays and readmissions. The population is very satisfied with services provided through this clinic.

There is also a telemetry service where eight patients can be accommodated.

Long-term Care, Palliative Care & Recreology
This 34-bed unit is for patients who require long-term and rehabilitation care (30 beds), as well as terminally-ill patients in need of palliative care (4 beds). Clients benefit from the services of a recreationist.

Mother-Child

Obstetrics
The Edmundston Regional Hospital Obstetrical Unit provides the following care and services: obstetrics, newborn, gynecological surgery, and gynecological oncology. The antepartum section is made up of a birthing room, two labour rooms, two delivery rooms, and a therapeutic bathroom. The Mother-Child Clinic offers pre and post-natal care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Pediatrics
The primary purpose of the unit is to provide care to sick children. The unit consists of 17 beds including: three continuous monitoring incubators for sick newborns having completed 34 weeks’ gestation, three beds or cribs for intensive pediatric care as needed, and 14 beds on the floor. Six beds on the floor are used as contingency beds for all services. This unit can accommodate adult patients to meet the needs of that population. There is an outpatient room in the unit for pediatric clinics. Outside specialists hold pediatric cardiology and neurology clinics every six months.
